Cyber Physical Systems Engineering Manager
What we do
Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for protecting freedom with innovation. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience transforming research into fieldable technology. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, cyber security, and advanced manufacturing. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs... at the speed of relevance.
We are growing a portfolio of applied research projects aimed at increasing the cyber resilience of cyber-physical systems fielded by the Navy. We are also developing a new cyber resilience and penetration testing framework to improve resilience of the future hybrid uncrewed/crewed fleet. This framework will be a key enabler for autonomous systems to be vetted against anomalies and/or adversarial attacks. Additionally, our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD's the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Our uncrewed systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned systems. Our advanced manufacturing portfolio includes works to improve the throughput and quality of high-temperature composite parts used in advanced military aerospace systems. Integer's diverse portfolio of novel R&D programs also means that we are uniquely positioned to provide feedback to the government on what emerging technologies exist that can fill specific capability gaps for the Department of Defense over various time horizons.

About the Role
Integer Technologies is currently hiring a Cyber Physical Systems Engineering Manager reporting to the Director of Cyber Physical Systems. The Cyber Physical Systems Engineering Manager will serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on large, multi-year cyber research programs with an emphasis on offensive cybersecurity methods for cyber physical systems on maritime platforms and hardening of said platforms against attacks. This role will lead the development of a cyber resiliency platform for multi-domain (surface and subsea) uncrewed and autonomous vehicles in the maritime environment.
Many of our projects focus on using sensor-informed edge-deployed models running onboard uncrewed platforms (e.g., uncrewed surface vessels and uncrewed underwater vessels) to make real-time assessments of mission goals and provide the operators of unmanned systems with decision aids to maximize mission outcomes. Executing this approach for maritime systems, which may involve multiple uncrewed or autonomous systems operating together to achieve a given mission, requires holistic system-wide modeling and simulation approach with a distillation of cyber- and resiliency-relevant factors correlated with mission outcomes. Therefore, we are particularly interested in candidates who have experience in extracting critical cyber-relevant data from dense sources (e.g., modeling and simulation tools, sensors, and/or machinery control systems) and translating that into actionable, mission-level information for autonomous decision making and cyber impact reasoning onboard autonomous systems.
Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand. The Cyber Physical Systems Engineering Manager must be able to serve as a Principal Investigator and a technical contributor with the technical background to contribute to the development of new technologies and prototypes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for cyber research programs, with an emphasis on offensive cyber security methods for cyber physical systems on maritime platforms and hardening of said platforms against attacks.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers and cyber research development group. Mentor researchers and engineers on toolsets, best practices, and state-of-the-art methods in cybersecurity research and systems engineering.
- Provide technical subject-matter expertise for the Company's projects related to secure software, cyber physical systems, and cybersecurity.
- Be the primary technical interface with Integer's academic research partners and serve as a liaison to government customers.
- Lead the development of sophisticated cybersecurity measures, including AI/ML security tools, to enhance the resilience of autonomous systems.
- Lead architecture design, development, and deployment of an attack emulation cyber-physical resilience stress testing platform that simulates sophisticated cyber threats for testing and validation of security measures in cyber-physical systems.
- Use prior experience and hands-on development skills to construct new vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, red-teaming, and reverse engineering tools for maritime autonomous systems.
- Translate research findings into, and contribute to, white papers and proposals for new cyber-related research projects. Proactively approach potential sponsors of new research programs (such as program managers at DARPA, Air Force Research Lab, Army Research Lab, and the Office of Naval Research) to send new cybersecurity proposals.
- Perform market analysis to identify unfilled market needs and work with the Director of Cyber Physical Systems to develop a roadmap for developing niche products and services that the cyber research group can realistically develop.
- Translate research into Navy relevant tools that meet specific mission requirements.
- Manage, track, and review deliverables to federal customers. Ensure program deadlines are met and manage priorities for multiple programs.
- Collaborate with federal sponsors to understand their missions, technology gaps, and success criteria.
Required Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Secret Clearance.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related field) and 5+ years of experience relevant to the primary responsibilities outlined above.
- An understanding of digital engineering, system modeling, and simulation tools, and how to apply those tools to mission-level assessments of overall system resiliency. This includes leading the development of modeling and simulation environments to develop and demonstrate novel cyber-reasoning capabilities.
- An understanding of the Navy's mission, capability gaps, and the ability to pursue new cybersecurity and resiliency research projects to address these needs.
- Experience conducting research on topics related to cyber-physical systems such as Internet of Things (IoT), Intelligent Sensors, Autonomous Systems, Industrial Control Systems, or other related topics.
- Experience developing software with general purpose languages in a production environment such as Python.
- Strong background in computer and network architecture and operating systems.
- Comfortable with modern software engineering practices such as version control.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and technical leadership.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 15% of time. This travel includes, but is not limited to, meetings with government customers, technical conferences, industry days, and off-site test events.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Masters or Ph.D. in relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or another related field).
- Experience with unmanned and autonomous systems research involving maritime autonomous systems such as uncrewed surface vessels and uncrewed underwater vessels.
- Experience with vulnerability assessment, exploit development, and/or reverse engineering for cyber-physical systems with AI/ML-based controllers or automation software (e.g., experience conducting research targeting AI/ML models within an autonomous systems' decision loop).
